One of the biggest beauty struggle you encounter when you are a brown/dark skin girl is choosing the right shade of foundation. For me, it has always been a pain in the butt until I learned 3 tips that I’m willing to share with you in this post.
IDENTIFY YOUR UNDERTONE
How is your bare skin ? Rosy ? Yellow ? You need to define if your undertone is warm, cool or neutral. In the following picture, you can see how to define your undertone.
KNOW YOUR TRUE COLOR VS YOUR TAN COLOR
Your foundation needs to match the color your skin is the most. With the weather changes, people tanning and/or lightening their skin (I’m NOT encouraging it don’t get me wrong), people don’t always know what their true color is. To make sure I have the right shade, I personally purchase a lighter shade for the winter and a darker shade for the summer time. You also need to be aware of the differences in the different areas on your face: your forehead – for example – can be a bit darker than the rest sometimes.
TEST ON YOUR FACE NOT YOUR HAND
This is the biggest mistake we make and I’m guilty of it. I don’t know why but most of the time, I try foundation on my hand instead of my face mostly because I don’t want to take my makeup off my face when I’m in the shop (lol). But don’t be like me! Try your foundation directly on your face and test several swatches to make sure it’s the right shade.
Choosing the right foundation is a very tricky process especially when you are Black since most brands don’t always have the right shade for our different skin tones. You must take this seriously because you want to be flawless and not look like a clown.
